A Complete Outdoor Transformation in Highland Park

Kaplan Paving recently completed this beautiful Concrete Patio project in Highland Park, IL. The work involved removing the existing concrete, correcting underlying base issues, improving drainage, installing premium Unilock pavers, adding heated walkway technology, and finishing the space with outdoor lighting.

Correcting the Base Before Installing New Concrete

After removing the existing concrete, Kaplan discovered that portions of the original base had not been installed properly.

Rather than covering over the problem, the crew removed the deficient areas and rebuilt the base correctly. Taking the extra time to address what was happening below the surface created a much stronger foundation for the new concrete and helped ensure long-term performance.

Underground Drainage Improvements

With the area already opened up, Kaplan also took the opportunity to improve drainage around the property.

Kaplan installed solid PVC drainage lines to bury the downspouts and direct water toward the center landscape island. Moving water away from the home and hardscape helps protect the surrounding improvements and creates a cleaner finished appearance.

Unilock Beacon Hill Flagstone Walkway

The existing front walkway was removed and replaced with Unilock Beacon Hill Flagstone pavers, adding a more refined look to the project.

The large-format pavers create an elegant transition through the outdoor space while complementing the newly installed concrete. The combination of concrete and premium pavers adds both visual interest and long-term durability.

Heated Walkway for Winter Convenience

One standout feature of this project is the heated walkway system installed beneath the pavers.

Heating mats were placed below the walkway so the homeowners can reduce the need for shoveling and salting during Highland Park winters. This makes the walkway more convenient and safer while also reducing exposure to deicing salt that can affect hardscape surfaces over time.
